This collection follows Elgar from early settings for the Catholic liturgy through to his heyday as the Empire's best-known composer, with powerful settings such as Give unto the Lord, commissioned for St Paul's Cathedral in 1914.

Reviews:

"these are beautifully sensitive performances of a selection of pieces from all phases of Elgar's career ... well worth investigating" The Observer 2004
"beautifully done ... the tenors and basses [have] a special concentration and vigour ... the freshness and the energy, a feeling for the joy of the thing"
"With fine organ-playing by Jonathan Vaughn and excellent recorded sound (producer, Andrew Walton), the disc ranks among the best choral issues of recent times"
Gramophone 2004
