Edmund Rubbra's works combine lyrical beauty and intellectual vigour. Both the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis and the Missa Cantuariensis are major contributions to the Anglican repertoire, whilst the Missa in honorem Sancti Dominici and the Nine Tenebrae Motets are Latin settings that place Rubbra in the central tradition of twentieth-century European religious writing.

Notes:

Soloists: Laurence Keegan-Fischer (Treble); Thomas Williams (Alto); Jonathan Bungard, Edward Lyon (Tenor)

Reviews:

"A superb centenary tribute from the fine choristers of St John's. Christopher Robinson has created a superb ensemble, heard to great effect in this haunting music ... Another winner from the Naxos/St John's, Cambridge stable - nourishing repertoire, captivated and captivating performances ... eloquent, humane ... a thoroughly idiomatic rendering of the taut and imposing Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in A flat" Gramophone 2001
