2012's leaving Gents with Andrew Nethsingha and David Lowe

Sunday was the Choir's final service of term and while the first Brit to play in the Wimbledon Final since 1938 battled Federer for the title, St John's Chapel was packed full of Choir families, friends, and dedicated supporters of the Choir, including former Director of Music, David Hill and composer of the first hymn tune, John Barnard. The service was preceded by John Challenger's final organ recital at St John's, before he moves on to Salisbury Cathedral.

St John's College Graduation Service 2012

This Sunday the Choir and College will say goodbye to another year of Choral Scholars and Choristers. Inevitably, with that, finishes the academic life of the leaving Gents – at least for most of them – and this is marked each year by a Graduation Service in Chapel. The service is for all members of the College who are graduating ('graduands') and usually takes the form of a series of a psalm, anthems and readings, usually including an extract from William Wordsworth's 'Ode on the intimations of immortality'.

st john's choir St John Passion thaxted

Completely zonked after last week's indulgences, and after a good few days rest, the Choir are back in College for another two weeks of services – officially called something rather unglamorous like the 'Choir Period of Residence', but to the Choir, just 'Long Vac', named after the 'Long Vacation' term, officially the fourth term in the year and intended mostly for research.

Gentlemen of St John's Lazing Summer CD

This last week has been the usual whirlwind of excitement of May Week which continues with the St John's May Ball tonight! Last night the Choir sang at the College's May Concert in Chapel – the May Concert, which used to take place in Hall and which in the past has been a rather rowdy affair. The concert not only involved the College Choir but a broad spectrum of the College's musical ensembles, including performances of Purcell's Sonata in four parts no.

Corpus Christi at St John's

As of yesterday, the last two Gents finally completed their exams and the celebrations can properly begin. Of course, ever professional, the Choir will still be singing services right up to this Sunday, and we're taking the opportunity to sing some brilliant music. Sunday, for instance, saw the epic combination of Walton's The Twelve, with words by W.H. Auden, and Howells's Gloucester Service. Howells wrote this set of evening canticles (arguably one of his very best) just after his time spent at St John's as Acting Organist during WWII.

Iain Farrington played at the Olympics Opening Ceremony

Iain Farrington (Organ Scholar 1996-99) performed in the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games on 27 July. He played the piano in a comic performance of Chariots of Fire with Rowan Atkinson (as Mr Bean) and the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.

"Performing in the London Olympics was a very special experience, in a sketch that combined a great orchestra and conductor, a comic genius and a stadium of 80,000 people in stitches of laughter," said Iain.
