Diamond Jubilee Choir Service

The spectacle of the Jubilee weekend was not absent from the minds of Cambridge students, fellows, staff and other members of the community, although it was unfortunate that this Jubillee-tide fell in the heaviest part of University exams! The result was most likely a small amount of celebration (small relative to the rest of the country) and a chance for us to preempt the Jubilee service at St Paul's today with Parry's I was glad on Sunday evening.

Matthew Martin St John's Service Magnificat Nunc Dimittis composer

The main feature of this past weekend was the first performance of a new commission, written for the Choir by Matthew Martin, a leading light in the country's future for composition, particularly in the world of sacred choral music. With huge experience in the choral scene both under Anglican and Catholic traditions, as an organist and a choir trainer, Matthew was a clear, ideal choice to write a new St John's Service for the Choir, following in the footsteps of Judith Weir, Philip Moore, and most significantly, Michael Tippett who wrote his iconic canticles for the Choir/College in 1961.

Performing in the brilliant acoustic at Kobe Shoin Women's University Chapel

Day 7

After a short ride on the bullet train from Kyoto we arrived in Kobe to sing at Kobe Shoin Women's University, an Anglican university founded by a Cambridge alumnus 120 years ago. The chapel was a bit smaller than some of our other venues but alongside this came a great improvement in acoustics, particularly for the renaissance polyphony; we opened with Byrd's five-part Mass, something which our countertenors were especially pleased about!

John Challenger, Organ Scholar 2008-11, Assistant Organist 2011-12

While the Choir is out in Japan, we thought we would take a moment to mention our two Organ Scholars, Freddie James and John Challenger, and thank them for all the work they do for the Choir.

The Shinkansen which we took from Kanagawa to Kyoto

On Monday we took the famous bullet train from Kanagawa to Kyoto and finally got a chance to see some Japanese countryside.

The train certainly lived up to its reputation – extremely comfortable, quick and remarkably on time (to the second!). Quite a refreshing change! Another difference was the choice of snacks on board: forget shortbread and jaffa cakes, most of the Gents bought sushi and 'bento boxes' to eat. Healthy, tick. Culture, tick.

Rehearsing in Otsuma Women’s University Concert Hall, Saturday 21 August

This weekend saw our first proper concerts of the tour and a chance for the Choir to get stuck into the rather broad repertoire which we've taken half-way across the world with us – big thanks should go to our Librarian, John Challenger, for lugging it all around and making sure we have the right pieces at the right time, to say nothing about getting ourselves in the right place at the right time!

Ascension Day Tower Service 2012

An historic week, full of tradition. The highlight of the week was undoubtedly Ascension Day (Thursday) with a Festal Eucharist in the morning – what better for this than Vierne – and Cambridge's own Charles Villiers Stanford inspiring Festal Evensong with his Evening Service in A and Coelos Ascendit Hodie. Most special on Ascension day is our own, century-old tradition of singing from the roof of the Chapel Tower at noon.

The British Embassy lit up with an Olympic countdown after our performance

After a couple of nights in a very comfortable hotel, we're slowly getting to grips with the different time-zone now – indeed a trip to a Buddhist temple and time to walk around Tokyo gave us thought to appreciate how far away from Cambridge we are!

Japan – Day 1

Thursday, July 12, 2012 - 15:24

On Wednesday morning, the Choir landed in a warm Japan – a change from the current British weather Although, almost as if to make us feel more at home, we experienced a tropical thunderstorm on our first evening!

Yesterday (still today in the UK), we had our first engagement at Seibi Gakuen Catholic Elementary School in Tokyo. After a brief rehearsal, the Choir performed a short set for the school who were gathered in their Chapel and The Gents sang a few numbers.
