Ascension service features in Cambridge Evening News

Sunday, June 5, 2011 - 12:00

A choral performance took place on the roof of St John’s College chapel yesterday as part of a tradition dating back more than a century.

Around 150 people gathered in the First Court of St John’s shortly before noon to listen to the 16 adult members of St John’s Choir sing the Ascension Day Carol from the chapel roof.
The choir ascended the chapel tower just before noon for the 109th time on Ascension Day, which commemorates the Christian belief of the bodily Ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven 40 days after his resurrection.

Choir members sang The Lord Ascendeth up on High, followed by O Rex Gloriae and a hymn, all led by director of music Andrew Nethsingha.
