PatBall on tour

This week's blog

Last week the Choir returned from their first tour this year – of Germany and Denmark. We toured Denmark in December 2010, performing concerts in Logumkloster and Herning. The second of these two cities has good ties with St John's as Dr Christopher Robinson, former Director of Music of St John's, makes regular visits to train their Choristers, as does David Lowe who teaches the Choristers and Choral Scholars here at St John's. We plan to head back to Herning in 2013 but it was to the first of these two to which we returned this time round. The concert in Logumkloster was so full the last time that members of the audience were bringing in their own chairs and putting them completely out of sight of the Choir, many facing the wrong direction entirely. So it wasn't a surprise to see the church full to the brim again for a less festive programme!

We were actually staying just over the border in Germany and had been singing in Germany over the weekend in the famous town of Wittenberg. On Easter day and Easter Monday we sang services in the Schlosskirche, the very place where Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-five Theses or "Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences". In fact the music on the Monday's service included the cantata which Bach wrote for Easter Monday in 1725. As with all of our tours, there was plenty of time not spent rehearsing or performing, not least to celebrate one of the Gents' birthdays and continue the hotly contested PatBall competition (pictured above)...
