The Last Supper, Leonardo da Vinci

This week's blog

This last week, the Gents and Choristers have been enjoying the deepest part of the holiday, some giving their voices a rest, some getting ahead with work, some even taking on solo engagements. There seem to be quite a few at this time of year. One of the best parts of singing at St John's, from the Choral Scholars' point of view, is the platform it can give you for launching a singing career. Although certainly not all, a high percentage of Gents go on to do singing (see our Alumni page for some examples). One aspect of being a Gent which lends itself towards this is the tuition which we all receive at the hands of David Lowe – it focuses highly on developing a soloistic voice and encourages, along with Andrew Nethsingha, taking opportunities for solo, concert and opera work outside of the Choir, both in and out of Cambridge. The other, very much linked, is that the way in which we are encouraged to sing while in the Choir is no different to our solo singing, with considerably more vocal freedom than many other choirs, but still within a framework of musical discipline.
