18 October 2020 Evensong

Recorded on
Sunday, 18 October 2020

This webcast includes Stanford's Evening Service in A, written for the Festival of the Sons of the Clergy at St Paul's Cathedral in 1880. It was originally conceived as a work for chorus and orchestra, and therefore its symphonic, almost Brahmsian construction is rather fitting (if unusual in Anglican settings of the canticles). The Nunc Dimittis builds inexorably to a climax at "And to be the glory of Thy people Israel", heralded here with St John's famous horizontal Trompeta Real organ stop.
