This webcast includes Stanford's Evening Service in A, written for the Festival of the Sons of the Clergy at St Paul's Cathedral in 1880. It was originally conceived as a work for chorus and orchestra, and therefore its symphonic, almost Brahmsian construction is rather fitting (if unusual in Anglican settings of canticles). The Nunc Dimittis builds inexorably to a climax at "And to be the glory of Thy people Israel", heralded here with St John's famous horizontal Trompeta Real organ stop.
