Purcell's verse anthem Rejoice in the Lord Alway has been nicknamed "The Bell anthem". The descending peals in the bass of the opening prelude, and the cheerful counterpoint above it make clear reference to campanology. The work was originally scored for soloists, full choir, continuo, and strings.
