Matriculation Service - 2 October 2016

Recorded on
Sunday, 2 October 2016

The Matriculation Service is the first service that the Choir sing together each year. At the service, all of the new members of College are welcomed before moving to Hall for Matriculation Dinner. This year the Choir welcomes two new undergraduate members of College – Louis Watkins and Matthew Gibson.

The first termly Cantata Evensong of the year takes place on Saturday 22 October at 6.30 PM and the Choir will be performing two of Bach's Cantatas (no. 10 and no. 46) accompanied by the St John's Sinfonia - the College's resident period instrument ensemble led by College musician-in-residence Margaret Faultless.

The Magnificat is taken from Dr Francis Jackson's Evening Service in G, written in 1953 during his time as Director of Music at York Minster, a post which he held for 36 years. The anthem, Sir Edward Elgar's Give unto the Lord (op. 74) is one of his later works and is written in Elgar's typical style; lengthy arching melodies, frequent changes in tempo and mood, and a rich harmonic language.
