Sung Eucharist - 9 October 2016

Recorded on
Sunday, 9 October 2016

This Eucharist service features the 'Little Organ Mass' by Joseph Haydn, written for the Barmherzige Brüder (Brothers Hospitallers) circa 1775. Haydn wrote four or five short masses and the Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo, often referred to as the 'Little Organ Mass', is the last. The 'Gloria' features an unusual compression of text where each vocal part sings verses from various parts of the Gloria at the same time - something which was deemed unacceptable at the time in places such as Salzburg.

The introit, Jesus bleibet meine Freude, (translation: Jesus shall remain my joy) is the tenth and final movement from Johann Sebastian Bach's Cantata 147, Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. The Cantata was originally written in Weimar in 1716 for Advent, but was later expanded in 1723 for the feast of the Visitation in Leipzig.
