Legacy Giving to the Choir

The Beaufort Society

If you have enjoyed the beauty and emotional power of St John's College Choir and would like to play your part in supporting the singers and musicians of tomorrow, leaving a gift in your will is a wonderful way to have a lasting impact. Your gift will help one of the finest choirs in the world, loved by millions for its broadcasts, concerts tours and recordings, to maintain a breadth and diversity of activity and the rigour of its education and training.

After providing for your friends and family, a legacy gift is an opportunity for you to make a real difference to a cause that you feel passionately about, and the charitable status of the College means that it is also a way for you to reduce the amount of inheritance tax on your assets. By leaving at least 10% of your estate to charity, you will be able to reduce IHT from 40% to 36%. Gifts may be in the form of money, property, or other valuables.

Membership of the Beaufort Society

Anyone informing us that they have promised a gift to the Choir in their will is welcomed as a lifetime member of the Beaufort Society. Named in honour of Lady Margaret Beaufort, whose founding bequest established the College, the Society was founded in 2009 for all those who intend to leave a legacy to St John's. Members and their guests are invited to an annual event in College in the autumn, enabling them to keep in touch with College life and to meet their fellow members. A smaller, more informal event also takes place in the spring, which typically includes a tour of the College and a buffet lunch.

As a small gesture of our appreciation, members are given a silver pin in the shape of a marguerite – Lady Margaret's flower. The marguerite will be familiar to Johnians and regular visitors, as it is represented all over College, from the Great Gate to the drainpipes in Chapel Court.

A Message from the Master

Professor Christopher Dobson, FRS

The Choir of St John's has been enriching the lives of College members since at least the seventeenth century, and remains one of the College's best-loved institutions. The sound of St John's is increasingly reaching out into the world through critically acclaimed recordings, concerts, tours and webcasts from the Chapel. I am very grateful for the support of all the Choir's friends for helping to ensure that it continues to provide beauty, solace, and inspiration to the world for many years to come.
