St John’s Voices

St John's College is also home to our sister choir, St John's Voices. Founded in 2013, 'SJV' is the College's mixed-voice choir that is open to all students at St John's, as well as volunteers from the wider City and University community. The choir is directed by Graham Walker, a former chorister and choral scholar of the College Choir.

St John's Voices has quickly developed a remarkable reputation for its emotionally-charged, musically committed performances. Their repertoire ranges from early Renaissance to the present day, and takes in substantial works by major composers: the motets of J.S. Bach have featured regularly in our Evensongs, for instance. They are passionate advocates for contemporary music, and have commissioned at least one new work every year, including several pieces over the years written by student members.

As well as singing Evensong every Monday during term time, St John's Voices performs regularly on tours and in concerts throughout the year. Recent tours have seen the choir travel to Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, and Hong Kong and Singapore, where they performed Handel's Messiah with members of the English Consort to sell-out audiences. Their first recording – choral music of William Mathias, recorded together with the Gentlemen of St John's – is now available from Naxos Records.
